5 Steps To Preparing Your RV For Storage

Posted on

It is once again that time of year when many people are forced to put their RV into storage until the winter season gives way to warmer temperatures and better road conditions. If you are planning to store your RV this winter, you will want to complete the following five steps before placing it in storage.

Step #1: Remove All Food And Thoroughly Vaccum The Interior

Even the smallest traces of food can attract pests to your RV during its time in storage. If you do not want to return to find your RV infested by mice or other common pests, you will need to take the time to remove all food before placing your RV into storage. After emptying the cabinets and fridge, be sure to thoroughly vacuum the entire interior to remove any food crumbs that may be present.

Step #2: Wash And Wax The Exterior

Substances such as bird droppings and road salt can be corrosive and will eat away at your paint over time. To prevent this type of damage, it is always best to wash the exterior of your RV before placing it into storage. Adding a fresh coat of wax to the exterior of your RV will also help to prevent any new debris from settling on your vehicle and damaging the paint.

Step #3: Make Sure Your Air Vents Are Open

Without proper air circulation, mold and mildew will be able to grow inside your RV during the time it is in storage. To prevent this, you will want to make sure that your air vents are in the open position before parking your RV for an extended period of time. You will also want to make sure that the door to your fridge and freezer is left cracked open to prevent mildew from growing inside while it is turned off.

Step #4: Drain All Water From Plumbing Tanks

Frozen pipes can result in serious damage that will cost you a pretty penny to repair when you are once again ready to hit the road in your RV. To prevent your pipes from freezing during the winter months, you will want to drain all of the water from your pipes and plumbing tanks. If you live in an area that experiences below-freezing temperatures, you may also want to add a small amount of antifreeze to your tanks to prevent any residual moisture from freezing and causing pressure to build up inside your pipes.

Step #5: Place Tarp Or Cover Over Tires

If you are planning to use an outdoor RV storage facility, you must take action to protect your tires from sun damage. This is because prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the rubber to weaken. If this happens you could experience a tire blowout the next time you take your RV out for a ride. The easiest way to prevent this type of damage is to place a tarp or other cover over each wheel.
